I probably should have posted when I arrived to the island, but there was not much to tell on the first day. All of us interns safely reached Eleuthera and have now been here for a week! We spent last week learning the ins and outs of the camp and Bahamian lifestyle, while also preparing the camp and grounds for our first volunteer group, who arrived yesterday.
Since there was not a volunteer group last week, we had our own family dinner every night and put our college cooking skills to the test! We soon realized that none of us are chefs, but were able to create something satisfactory for every meal. I have also been getting up bright and early every morning to help prepare breakfast.
Saturday, we drove to the northern tip of the island where we boarded a small boat to deliver supplies to Current Island, where we currently have another group working under the supervision of two interns, Maggie and Derek. While we were there, we got to see the Children's Home that will have its grand opening later this month.
The children's home is stocked with all the right books. :)
After doing the day's work, Abraham, who is the executive director of BMH, surprised us with a relaxing day of cliff jumping!
Back to work on Sunday, we finally welcomed our first group of volunteers! I greeted a group at the airport, and then hiked down to the beach with them in the afternoon.
There seems to be a theme for my injuries thus far: burns. I first burned my fingertips while cleaning the door frames with bleach (those burns were small and have already faded). I then burned my neck and tops of my shoulders while delivering goods to Current Island. Today I burned the top of my hand on the oven while baking cookies. Thankfully though, I haven't been very itchy from the Mosquitos. The bugs have been ruthless for the past day or two, and some of the other interns haven't been as lucky!
That is my week at a glance, and I will try and update whenever I have anything more interesting to share!
